Community Sustainability

The City of Boca Raton continues to be a leader in community sustainability and environmental stewardship. The City is committed to reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas production, conserving energy, protecting native wildlife, preserving environmentally sensitive land, conserving water resources and providing education programs.

Some of the sustainability efforts of the City include:

  • Reclaimed water for irrigation
  • Active recycling program
  • Bicycle and walking trails throughout the City
  • Exotic plant removal project
  • Turtle light project – City and Department of Transportation
  • Use of biodeisel fuel in City vehicles
  • Environmentally sensitive land program
  • Energy efficient lighting fixtures
  • Computerized irrigation systems

The City is a member of the U.S. and Florida Green Building Coalitions and has received a number of awards and recognition for its environmental programs:

  • Recycling Award - Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority
  • Reclaimed Water Recognition - Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection (FDEP)
  • Tree City USA (30 consecutive years) - Florida State Division of Forestry & the US Forest Service
  • Bicycle Friendly City - League of American Bicyclists

Boca Raton Green Partners -  To forward community sustainability in the City of Boca Raton, a partnership was formed with the key community participants – including government, residents, the business community, and the educational institutions.  The purpose of the Boca Green Partners is to coordinate and cooperate on environmental programs, projects and events.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center - The Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex was founded in 1984 as a cooperative venture between the City of Boca Raton, Palm Beach County School District, and the Florida Atlantic University, and its mission is to increase public awareness of coastal and marine ecosystems through research, education, preservation and conservation.
